This term I've been slowly watching a sort of graffiti gang war develop over the urinals in one of the men's washrooms in the A building at Langara, as a faction that writes positive, life-affirming messages like "Life is great!" has started to horn in on the traditional territory of one that writes grumpy abuse like "U ALL SUCK". It really is that polarised -- there's no mistaking one for the other, and there doesn't really seem to be anything in between; there really is, by the handwriting, more than one person on each side; and they really are not just working in parallel at opposing agendas but actually getting into arguments with one another right there on the wall. Here are some of my favourite exchanges:
  • "YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!" "Hippie."
  • "F--- THE ENTIRE SCHOOL" "Wow u r sure energetic!"
  • "Jesus died for nothing." "NO."

Meanwhile, livejournal seems to have started Microsoft Word-style red underlining of words it finds dubious, but seems stuck on American spelling. Also, it doesn't recognise 'livejournal'; awesome.

That's not Livejournal; that's the new Firefox. I haven't updated to it yet. X)

That explains why it only happens at school, I guess.

Without any knowledge of the other exchanges that may have taken place, those are my favorites too.

I was going to say especially one of them, but I really can't pick one over the others. They're all so wonderful!

I think the last one's my favourite, which is why I put it last.

it is like this in the girls washroom too. 'cept, all the arguements are about sex. sometimes, someone tries to start a new arguement about how we shouldn't only argue about sex, but of couse that only gets into more arguements about sex.

In the secret washroom under the stairs by the drama department, it's (or it used to be) a discussion of Radiohead lyrics. Plus some self-congratulatory notes about how the authors know about the secret washroom.

Are the arguments about sex political, or...?

1) I LOVE college graffiti. It's just some of the best stuff ever. I used to sit in the far corner of the old dungeon library on my college's downtown campus and read the mostly religious related graffiti on the desk back there.

2) it is like this in the girls washroom too. 'cept, all the arguements are about sex.

Hahaha, how ironic. I'd expect it to be the other way around. Maybe boys are sneaking in there. xP

3) Radiohead lyrics? Freaking AWESOME! That would rule. Also, I would LOVE a secret bathroom. ...actually, I already have one! I use the "secret" bathroom at work, which is hidden in the back corner of the "book room", like, in the back of a CLOSET there. It's totally effin' awesome. It is my favorite bathroom in the whole building. :o)))

I actually saw the floorplans for work once and scoured them for secret bathrooms. I don't THINK this is how I found the secret bathroom, but it is where I confirmed it.

4) I am in love with cell phone cameras for this reason in particular. Whenever I see cool graffiti in the restroom, I can snap a pic and take it out to show my male friends who would not otherwise (under typical circumstances) be able to see.

I totally haven't seen any awesome graffiti in my college bathrooms (despite what that cartoon I drew might lead you to believe).

The only conversation I've seen was a really depressing thing where somebody put up a sticker about how to report sexual harrassment, and somebody else told them to quit whining and called them terrible names, and a couple other people got offended.
