Guessing game

Okay, here's that thing that's going around, and how it works:

I) I'll post ten things I'm a fan of.
II) You will attempt to guess my favourite character from each. (I have tried to limit myself to cases where I have a clear favourite. In many of them, though, it's only by a bare margin, and there are other characters whose mention will constitute at least a partial victory.)
III) Upon your success, I'll put that line in bold, append the correct answer, and write a sentence or so about my affection for that character. (The sentences may wait to be supplied in bunches.)

1. Babylon 5 (G'Kar - The Lurker's Guide entry for the pilot remarks that G'kar is "consistently transparent in his emotional states"; and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that for all the changes he goes through, this remains constant. Through all his passions and wisdom, you can still see exactly what he's feeling. That's near the heart of it.)
2. Angel (Wesley - This has been the most difficult to quantify, which is why I've put it off for a week. Is it the scope of his personal evolution, how impressive and competent this incompetent becomes, and how gloriously recognizable he remains througout? His decency and ruthlessness? His little self-deprecations? His erudition? His strange accent and periodic stubble? All of these things, yes.)
I do not have a favourite Buffy character, but if you want to guess as to which five or six or seven I can't choose between, feel free. That can be 2a.
3. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (villains) (Fisheye - It is well-documented that I have no explanation for this. I was hooked from the very moment I first thought, "Wait, that's a guy?", and though he would go on to earn this affection, it remains, at its core, elusive and irrational.)
4. Harry Potter (Albus Dumbledore - Because he has so much fun.)
5. Joan of Arcadia (God - "I do not 'pop'. I abide.")
6. X-Men (Beast - I like how gentle he is; a bulky, superagile, blue-haired ape-man, characterized most by a deep thoughtfulness and a wry, twinkling willingness to be silly.)
7. Waitility mythos [as with Tanetris, characters other than my own]
8. LotR (novels) (Gollum - The odd, twisted flashes of nobility; the unlikely redemption. Plus, I've always been a sucker for distinctive speaking styles.)
9. Final Fantasy 8 (Laguna - Because he's clumsy and honest and adorable and good, and I (also clumsy and often surface-incompetent) found that strangely inspiring. And he's adorable. Did I mention that?)
10. Slayers (Lina Inverse - There is nobody else like Lina. She's greedy; she's gluttonous; she's acerbic; she's cocksure and arrogant (though underconfident in her looks); she's cheerfully careless with the application of dreadfully destructive magics; she's one of the most entertaining and sympathetic characters in all of anime.)

I have also unlocked the

Extreme Round!

11. Bruno (Stanley - As I recall, he only pretends to be a terrible cook. For that, and how well he gets along with Bruno, and his cantankerous compassion, and his perseverence, and his gigantic chin.)
12. Akira (manga)

To avoid pulling a Rachel-and-Pam, (my) Rachel and I will avoid guessing the ones we're sure of until others have had a chance. :-p

2a. Surely one of them must be Oz

6. You strike me as a Jean Grey fan

7. Chihiro

8. Gandalf

9. Quistis (and if it's not, it should be)

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
2a. It surely must. Such comfortable, compassionate aplomb. I miss him. (Aren't you going to guess for Angel, too? You're one of the only people reading this who I know to have seen it!)

Otherwise, you'll have to try again.

i would have guessed ONLY willow for 2a. oh well.

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
She's not the only character I'm very fond of; just the only one who, during seasons one through three, can elicit huge, helpless, gusty sighs. (Also probably the most linguistically adorable of the bunch, which is saying something.)

[identity profile] tanetris.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'd thought about it but I really haven't a clue... But I suppose if I must, then I must...

2. Fred/Illyria?
And another 2a. Willow

6. Rogue?

7. Ashika?

8. Elrond?

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
2. Illyria isn't my primary either, but oh, is she up there. And yet (very vague spoilers, but if, say, Yoon Ha Lee is reading, she may want to skip), it's so painful and appalling to watch her, and recall what price had to be paid that she come into being, so I feel just as ambivalent as the characters do. It's great!

6,7,8. None of these.

-Garran

[identity profile] tanetris.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
2. This is reaching a fair bit, but: Drogan?
Pushing my luck further, another 2a: Anya?

6. Beast

7. Alright... The ninja arcade owner?

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
2. Those were a good two episodes, but...
2a. No. Although Selfless is one of my favourite episodes.

6. Yes!

7. No, but he's great.

-Garran

[identity profile] bubbleteagirl.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
2: fred?

[identity profile] bubbleteagirl.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
1. the captian
2. as i said before, fred
4. Ron
6. Prof. X
8. Gollum

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
1. Nope.
2. Fred isn't the answer I was looking for, but she's definitely one of my secondary favourites. So battered and geeky and hopeful and ruthless and downright weird.
4, 6. Nope! (Although I like both of them.)
8. Yes. The odd, twisted flashes of nobility; the unlikely redemption. The first unqualified success!

-Garran

[identity profile] masamage.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
8. You know, I thought until just now that your last sentence here was a part of your description of Gollum. It delights me.

[identity profile] meta4mix.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
4. Hermione?

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hermione is all kinds of swell, but not the apple of my eye in this case.

-Garran

[identity profile] tanetris.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, because I forgot to try the obvious guess for Angel, and you've tempted me with talk of FF8...

2. Lorne

9. Laguna

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
2. No. Well... No. But... No. Well, maybe a little bit. Lorne is fantastic.

9. Yeah, you've got it.

-Garran

[identity profile] vorkon.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
3) Oh, I know! It's that one weird-looking youma, that looked like an elf encased in a stack of spare tires, right? Man, that one sure was freaky looking...

Oh, wait... He wasn't a Monster-of-the-Day, was he? Sorry... ^.~

10) I'm going to guess Lina, for some reason. I'm not entirely sure why.

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
You're flush with success, so I'll let your insolence slide this time.

(By the way, welcome home.)

-Garran

[identity profile] vorkon.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! ^_^

(for welcoming me home, or for letting my insolence slide? I'll let you decide for yourself... >.>)

[identity profile] masamage.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
When is it my turn? ^_^

I will guess Joan, since no one else has yet and I'm not sure: God?

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You have victory! I figured you'd be the one to get that one; I'm not sure anybody else watches it. ^^;

The strange symmetry of our successful guesses amuses me.

-Garran

[identity profile] wizardofkitty.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wild Guess.

7. Tanaka Rei?

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, not who I'm looking for. (Though I still want to see her go on a date with Jon Marlinspike.)

-Garran

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yours is the winning.

-Garran

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Um

1: Zathrus?

4: *blink* Man, I'm completely forgetting those characters for some reason. Snape? (Wild guess)

11: man, I haven't read that in ages. Perhaps Jeremy? (I hope that's his name)

[identity profile] masamage.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Zathras! No one listens to Zathras...

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
There's ten of us. Well, nine now...

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like all three of those characters (and would almost certainly have picked Jeremy as my favourite had it not been for the other), but none of them, alas, is correct. By all means, keep trying. ^^

-Garran

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
11: Well, since I can't remember any of the other characters names 'cept for Bruno, I suppose that she's my next guess.

4: What about Dumbledor? (That spelling looks wrong.)

1: Vir?

(spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
11. Well, it cannot be questioned that I'm fond of Bruno - without such, there would, after all, be little impetus to read the strip. Perhaps it's because I can count on seeing her so often that she commands a secondary affection to the correct guess. (It is someone who's been around long enough that you knew them, for what it's worth.)

1. Vir is wonderful enough that it can only be read as a testament to the show that he isn't my favourite.

4. You have it!

-Garran

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
11: Um, that guy.. that had a big house in the middle of nowhere.. he's a bad cook.. Is his name something like Stanley?

4: Hurray! He is quite the guy.

1: Alright then, what about Marcus?

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
11. That's his name indeed.

Uh, and you're right.

1: Points for being British, and awesome. No points for not being the individual I'm thinking of.

-Garran

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] masamage.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Keep 'em!!"

"Thank you!"

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for quote!

How about..

1. Lennier?

or

1. G'Kar?

1. Londo?

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] garran.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
1.2 and victory is found.

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] lady-panther.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I approve of your favorite character! Not that you need my approval, but there you go.

He's such a good actor! Especially in the later seasons ^_^

Also, belated yay for Stanley. 'Though to be honest, I don't remember that much about him. I keep thinking about reading that comic again.

Re: (spirit of etc.)

[identity profile] masamage.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. It would take sooooo long by now....
